Jocelyn C. Zuckerman is my guest on Episode 128 of Inside Ideas with Marc Buckley.
James Beard Award-winning journalist Jocelyn C. Zuckerman spent years traveling the globe, from Liberia to Indonesia, India to Brazil, reporting on the human and environmental impacts of this poorly understood plant. The result is Planet Palm, a riveting account blending history, science, politics, and food as seen through the people whose lives have been upended by this hidden ingredient. The little oil palm fruit has played an outsized role in world history and economic development. But the multi-billion-dollar palm oil business has been built on stolen land and slave labour; it spurred colonisation and swept away lives and cultures. Today, its fires and mass deforestation generate carbon emissions to rival those of entire industrialized nations, and they’ve pushed animals like the orangutan to the brink of extinction.
Jocelyn is a freelance writer based in Brooklyn. The former deputy editor of Gourmet, articles editor of OnEarth, and executive editor of Modern Farmer, she has written for Audubon, The American Prospect, newyorker.com, nationalgeographic.com, and many other publications. A graduate of Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, she served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya and is a former fellow with the Washington, DC-based Alicia Patterson Foundation.
